Thanks. How are we to be silent inwardly, meaning to become empty inwardly?

As Max Greene put it above, it is an illusion, this construct "I". All phantsmagoria of the thought-processes constantly flowing like a river.

Dear Bob, yes in a way, one can say that metaphorically. The "I" is the tiger that I am riding. I cannot slip away, if I fall, it would devour "me" with the unending chatter of the thought-processes.So ,better "I" sit tight! In the history narrated about Indias turmoils & Indira Ghandhis troubles were an endless beehive of activities that powerful politicians initate and find afterwards, difficult to control what they themselves set in motion. That one can observe just now in IRAN too.As individual"karma" strikes back at one like a boomerang, the collective- karma of a nation also strikes back again. Nothing is new. It is all the same old repeated story that becomes Mans History!

Dear Bob, you are right, I was trying to be aware at the moment, Castigating or categorizing these corrupt politicians will not make them disappear. organizations of one kind or another will flourish as long as men&women are insecure in themselves and want ,paucity of resources&poverty rules the roost. Thanks again for reminding me of sensitivity, I am not aspiring to be transformed because I accept what "I" AM, regards Krishnan

In practical life, it is difficult for individuals to identify with Advaita, so in India ,many have taken the course of VISISTADVITA & MADVAS teachings.JK becomes a puzzle to many to follow in practice.Though many go a long way in going together with him in exploring the SELF, MIND,LOVE,FREEDOM, TRUTH and other subjects, one is easily lost in a total perspective. So even a simpleton can follow the BHAKTHI cults abounding in India without much mental /intellectual effort. The result is entrenched RELIGIONS!

The term "aware" is derived from the old English"geware" meaning "watchful". The present meaning is to be"cognisant" or "conscious of".... What, I mean, to be conscious of what/which? That is to to be cognisant/conscious of the WHOLE/TOTALITY! That means understanding without any fragmentation introduced by ever-interfering thought.Thought can form the "I"/ME etc.So , one has to be conscious of what one is in the whole realm of the things of the UNIVERSE! Do "I" sound crazy....?

Consciousness has, thought/speech&Language/video-forms of memory, feelings, emotional experiences-etc all these as its content. That does not preclude the process of "WATCHFULNESS".So thought can watch itself, then it becomes aware of itself.

Topic: Is it impossible to live with nonattachment in LIFE?

Dear Max, It is a question of "Security", inner security for the organism. Since leaving the mothers womb, the individual is looking for "external support", "re-assurance" to anchor oneself in LIFE. That identity of the "I" is shaped by the tribe, culture, parents, language, religion etc, the whole flow of "outer Consiousness" impinging upon the "inner consciousness" and thereby creating this phantom construct"I". Buddha inquired for the end of all misery in the world, or rather SORROW/"DUKKA" and he found the source to be "DESIRE". JK on the other hand, points the finger at"FRAGMENTATION" . "I" cannot unlearn or wean away from my"I" but I acn observe my "I" how it became. I can quiten it by being AWARE of it all the TIME.

yes very much so. I recommend our forum members to read "TALES OF MULLAH NASRUDDIN" in between their serious engagement here. Here is one example: Mullah Nasruddin was searching in the sands under the street lamp in his village. The villagers asked him what he is looking for. He replied: "I lost my needle at home" They said:" why are you searching here in the sands instead of your house?" He replied: My house is dark. Here I have the light of the street lamp to search for"- We need to break from the grooves of JK-CONDITIONING too in between.

There is the cosmic order out in the Universe(s) and we are all familiar with our own inner chaos/disorder. To be without judgement and to be free of wishful"thinking" requires "EFFORT".Is it not? but, to me, "Awareness" arrives upon one when the person is absolutely and totally free of his/her "self"/"EGO". One can look at a flower and be lost in awareness. Wrinkled face of an old person can trigger awareness on observing deeply at face. One cannot command at will these psychedelic experiences or moments of awareness. What I mean is one cannot cultivate it. It comes on its own will.

Krishnan,

A couple of things. Is effort needed to be free? If we are involved in becoming, in trying to reach a goal (we aren't talking about a physical goal)--in other words, if we are making an effort to attain--we will never be free. Why is that? Simply because when we are "trying," we aren't actually "doing"! We're too busy.

Awareness has to be now--awareness in the past or the future is impossible. "Trying" to be aware is not awareness. So how are we, as physical organisms, aware? We are aware through our senses. It might be said that awareness IS sensing. If we don't sense something, we certainly aren't aware of it.

Dear Max , I agree entirely with you on the futility of #effort#.

In relation to our discussions here, I am quoting below SRI RAMANA MAHARSHI`s "EKATMA PANCHAKAM" translated into English.(translation:Prof.K.Swaminathan)

 1. When, forgetting the Self, one thinks That the body is oneself and goes Through innumerable births And in the end remembers and becomes The Self, know this is only like Awaking from a dream wherein One has wandered over all the world.
 2.

One is ever the Self. To ask oneself "Who and whereabout am I?" Is like the drunken man`s enquiring "Who am I?" and "Where am I?"

3- The body is within the Self. And yet

One thinks one is inside the inert body, Like some spectator who supposes That the screen on which the picture is thrown Is within the picture.

 1. Does an ornament of gold exist Apart from the gold? Can the body exist Apart from the Self? The ignorant one thinks "I am the body", The enlightened knows "I am the Self".

 2. The Self alone, the Sole Reality Exists for ever. If of yore the First of Teachers Revealed it through unbroken silence Say who can reveal it in spoken words?

So I have nothing to add just now on this. Regards, Krishnan

Yes.On the political front we have seen how fear of the "other/s" has created SEATO, NATO, COMMUNIST alliances etc. Even today there is enormous human energy invested in grouping one group against another. That is very obvious to us. they fail and they reshape and give different names&forms-endless human war-mongering, conflict-infested activity.Huge sums are spent in defence of one against another. So this "I" is not playing havoc not only on"Me" but the "COLLECTIVE I" is causing immense suffering to humanity at large. Do you think this all would dissipate into thin air- this entrenched buildings of "I"?

The psychologists have their construct "Intelligence" and they measure &compare the the intelligence of individuals. I ask, is there an "INTELLIGENCE" common to us all?It is not"my" intelligence or "your"intelligence here we are concerned about, out there, is there an INTELLIGENCE, for example coordinating all the plnetary, cosmic activity as well as our ,mean, mundane existence on this beauttiful planet called Earh?

But it is important to say that it is "my view" so that it will be different from "my opinion." Opinion is thought and belief; viewing, even when distorted, is seeing--an entirely different act from opinion.

Looking forward to more on this.

"Knowledge, belief, conviction, conclusion and experience are hindrances to truth. They are the very structure of the self"-J-Krishnamurti:Rajagopal,D.:Commentaries on living:from the notebooks of J.Krishnamurti,New Delhi, 1972:BI Publications-page89. Further one can go step by step following J.K by his words/sentences such as the following:(Quotes from various publications of JK) "The naming is the process of the thinker Thoughts creates the thinker The very process of thinking creates the "me" There is only thinking, there is no thinker."

In my opinion, dear Max, the devil is "Thinking" How to cut it off and be SILENT? Or how am "I" going to tear "myself" apart from the flow of "Thinking"?

There lies the difference in that the so.called-smart are not smart at all in intelligent way of living. Just now on the TV I saw how in Alberta, smart-sand.gropers are suking oil from sands & killing people, flora&fauna on that beautiful river&forest- area. That is not intelligence at all,I wonder the Intelligence out there I am referring to, has its own mighty way of teacching these smart people, may be sudden may be insidiously gradual,So smart by IQ or neuronal count does not count with this INTELLIGENCE, This INTELLIGENCE is communicating to us in many dimensions, but are we listening to it?
